FAQ for Families

Understanding Dyslexia

Supporting Struggling Readers with Evidence-Based Instruction

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that makes reading and spelling difficult. It does not reflect low intelligence or poor effort. Students with dyslexia often struggle with decoding, fluency, and spelling, even when they are bright and motivated.

What signs should I look for?

Common indicators of dyslexia include:

  • Difficulty sounding out words

  • Weak spelling or writing skills

  • Slow, effortful reading

  • Avoiding reading or writing activities

  • Struggles remembering letter sounds or sight words

These signs often become noticeable in grades 1–3 but may be present earlier.

Does my child need a diagnosis to get support?

No. While a formal diagnosis can be helpful, it is not required to begin structured, personalized learning. I assess your child’s strengths and needs and create a custom plan based on current data.

How is this different from tutoring?

General tutoring often focuses on homework or class content. At CultivatED, I provide structured, research-based and evidence-aligned instruction that targets the root causes of literacy challenges, including dyslexia. Every session is intentional, diagnostic, and aligned with the Science of Reading body of research.

What is Structured Literacy?

Structured Literacy is a systematic, explicit approach to teaching reading. It covers phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, syntax, and comprehension. This method is highly effective for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. In fact, it’s highly effective for all students.

How do I get started?

We begin with a free consultation to discuss your child’s needs and determine the best next steps.

Parent FAQs

Support That’s Clear, Consistent, and Designed for Growth

Do you only work with students who have dyslexia?

No. While I specialize in Structured Literacy and dyslexia-informed instruction, I support a wide range of learners. This includes students with general reading challenges, ADHD, math difficulties, and executive function concerns. Every student receives a personalized plan tailored to their needs.

What ages or grade levels do you work with?

I work with students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Most of my literacy support focuses on K–6, but I also support middle school students who need continued help with decoding, fluency, or comprehension.

How do you assess a child’s needs?

I begin with a consultation and skill-based screeners in literacy or math. These tools help identify strengths and target areas for growth. I use this information to build a personalized plan and monitor progress consistently.

Can you work with my child even if they get support at school?

Yes. My services often complement school-based support, especially when families feel their child’s needs aren’t being fully met. I work in coordination with IEPs or intervention plans when applicable.

What’s the difference between Structured Literacy and Balanced Literacy?

Structured Literacy is explicit, systematic, and evidence-based. It includes instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling, syntax, and comprehension. Balanced Literacy is more student-led and exposure-based. Structured Literacy is strongly supported by research, especially for students with dyslexia.

How long will it take to see progress?

Every learner is different. Some students show gains within a few weeks, while others benefit from longer-term, consistent support. I monitor growth through data and share updates regularly with families.

Do you offer summer sessions?

Yes. Summer is an ideal time for students to strengthen key skills without the pressure of a full school schedule. I offer flexible sessions and custom summer learning plans.

How do virtual sessions work?

Virtual sessions are interactive and structured. I use secure video tools and digital learning resources tailored to your child’s goals. I also provide optional materials for between-session practice and keep communication open with families.

How do we get started?

You can schedule a free consultation to discuss your child’s needs and determine the right support path.

FAQs for Schools & Educators

Clear Answers. Collaborative Solutions. Research-Driven Support.

What types of schools or districts do you work with?

I work with public, private, and charter schools, as well as regional service providers and small districts. Whether your team is just beginning the shift toward Structured Literacy or building on existing work, I provide practical support aligned to your current goals.

Do you offer coaching, professional development, or both?

Both. I offer in-person and virtual instructional coaching, as well as interactive professional development sessions tailored to your school’s needs. I also provide follow-up support to ensure that learning transfers into classroom practice.

Are your services aligned to Structured Literacy and MTSS?

Yes. All services are grounded in Structured Literacy principles, the Science of Reading, and MTSS frameworks. I help schools strengthen Tier 1 core instruction while building clarity and consistency across Tier 2 and Tier 3 support.

Do you provide curriculum training?

Yes. I support the rollout and implementation of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), including those aligned with Structured Literacy. I offer lesson modeling, co-planning, and walkthrough tools to help teachers feel confident with new resources.

Can you help with data use and instructional planning?

Absolutely. I support schools in using formative and diagnostic data to plan small-group instruction, identify student needs, and strengthen MTSS practices. I can also guide your team through screener review, item analysis, and decision-making protocols.

How are your services different from what consultants typically offer?

I bring nearly 20 years of classroom and intervention experience, not just a slide deck. My work is hands-on, responsive, and built around the realities of teaching today. I build trust with educators and tailor support so that it sticks.

How do we schedule services or request a proposal?

Start with a free planning call. We’ll talk about your goals, timeline, and team needs. I’ll then create a customized service proposal outlining scope, format, and pricing.
